When the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1, it was the first time the 49ers opened a season with win on the road since 2014. The 49ers will try to earn their second consecutive win when they face the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday (10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET on FOX, or DirecTV) in a Week 2.
The 49ers (1-0) didn’t produce a great performance in their win over the Buccaneers. They had three touchdowns nullified because of penalties and two turnovers, including quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s pass that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. However, the defense forced four turnovers - including two pick-six interceptions returned for touchdowns - and the special teams’ blocked punt resulted in a touchdown for the offense.
The Bengals (0-1) suffered a bitter 21-20 loss at Seattle last week, but they have plenty of positives to build on moving forward. The new offense installed by first-year coach Zac Taylor resulted in quarterback Andy Dalton passing for a career-high 418 yards, along with two touchdowns. Wide receiver John Ross - seven receptions, 158 yards, two touchdowns - finally looked like he’s worthy of being the No. 9 pick in the 2017 NFL draft, and not someone who has struggled the past two seasons.
