The Buffalo Bills are looking to establish a winning culture that they hope can help guide them through an improved AFC East this season. While it might not count in the standings, Buffalo is certainly off to a strong start this preseason. The Bills are coming off back-to-back wins over the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers to open the exhibition slate. Now they face their toughest test yet as they head on the road to face the winless Detroit Lions. Detroit is coming off consecutive losses to the New England Patriots and Houston Texans to open the preseason. Here is a closer look at the matchup.

After posting a 3-5 record in preseason action over his first two seasons with the Bills, head coach Sean McDermott has improved to .500 by winning the first two games of this year’s exhibition schedule. The Bills have depth at key positions and that’s made a big difference.

Meanwhile, Detroit is just 1-4 in preseason games under second-year head coach Matt Patricia. The Lions only won a single exhibition game a year ago. They don’t seem to care about these games – especially when you see them trotting out veteran journeyman Josh Johnson to run bizarre offensive sets.

Buffalo Bills
The biggest positive that McDermott can take from Buffalo’s two preseason games is the play of second-year quarterback Josh Allen. Allen went 9-of-11 for 102 yards while leading the Bills to points on each of their first two possessions against Carolina. After a strong finish to his debut season, football fans in Buffalo are hoping that the young passer can continue to grow this season. But even behind him, Matt Barkley has been one of the best quarterbacks in the preseason too.

At running back, LeSean McCoy, T.J. Yeldon and Tyree Jackson combined for 59 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries against the Panthers. And that doesn’t include rookie Devin Singletary, who has been a standout player for the Bills so far. This team is particularly deep at running back, so they should continue to run the football effectively against a Detroit defense that has struggled to slow down opposing rushing attacks.

Detroit Lions
Considering the quarterback situation in Detroit heading into Week 3 of the preseason, there is a good chance this offense continues to struggle. Matthew Stafford is expected to take limited snaps in his first exhibition action this week.

Tom Savage is sidelined with a concussion, leaving David Fales and Josh Johnson as the backups competing for the backup role. But beyond the players, you have to look at what this team has been running. Without diving too much into the nitty-gritty, they’ve been widely criticized – especially by the NFL’s Brian Baldinger – for not really trying to accomplish anything in the preseason.

Detroit has allowed an average of 30.5 points per game in losses to the Patriots and Texans. That’s not a good sign.

Giants rookie Daniel Jones stood out last week while passing for 161 yards and a touchdown in the victory. He went 5-for-5 with a touchdown in the opener.

Bengals WR A.J. Green remains sidelined following ankle surgery without a real timeline for his return other than head coach Zac Taylor admitting he will miss regular-season games.

Giants WR Sterling Shepard should debut this week after sustaining a thumb injury early in training camp. Golden Tate , who will be suspended the first four games of the year, has a catch in each exhibition game thus far. He is now in the league's concussion protocol.
playMGM lines project both teams to win six games in the regular season, with the under favored for both clubs.

Atlanta lost its first two games by four and seven points, respectively, before dropping a 22-10 decision to the New York Jets last week. QB Matt Ryan made his preseason debut and led his team with 118 passing yards but didn't have a touchdown.
The Redskins lost by 20 and 10 points in their first two games. Rookie QB Dwayne Haskins led the team in passing yards both times.

Finally, the third week of the preseason is here. Not that I like these meaningless games, but week three is where we get to see the big names playing at least a half before the regular season week one.

The Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots will go at it this week in what looks like a fun matchup. Neither of these teams has given preseason time to their starting quarterbacks.

If we are honest, Cam Newton and Tom Brady don’t need the reps. However, week three is different.

It’s the last chance to see a glimpse of what the team can be for week one. Panther’s head coach Ron Rivera mentioned Newton would play on Thursday. Rivera didn’t say for how long. I’m expecting two series or three at the most.

QB Cam Newton underwent surgery to repair his throwing arm shoulder in the offseason. Carolina is trying to be careful about how they handle his return.

I don’t even think Cam will be all that useful in those series. He has seen limited time throwing the football during training due to his recovery process.

Kyle Allen will be the second QB, according to Rivera. Allen is the quarterback with least time on the field during the preseason, of all the three fighting for the backup job. I’m sure Taylor Heinicke and Will Grier will get some reps as well.

The New England Patriots, on the other side, haven’t put Tom Brady on the field in the first two games of the preseason. There is no need to risk someone who has seen it all entering his 20th year in the NFL.
Brady is expected to play on Thursday, but head coach Bill Belichick hasn’t said how much. The Patriots welcomed back three playmakers this week. The team scratched the name of WR Julian Edelman on the injury list, and he will be ready to go.

They also have WR Josh Gordon back after the NFL allow him to come back into the league. The availability of Gordon for Thursday’s game is a little more in question.

One underrated story of the preseason has been the performance of the Patriots rookie QB Jarrett Stidham, who is beating QB Brian Hoyer for the backup job. Stidham is feeling it. He threw 193 yards and two scores last week against the Titans while completing 14 of 19 passes.

I know preseason football means nothing, but when the training camp opened Hoyer was the undisputed backup, and that has changed now. Their performance in week three should give one of those two names the edge for the job.

After rattling off consecutive victories against the Jaguars and Packers, the Ravens hit the road in Week 3 of the preseason to take on the Eagles. After two successful joint practices earlier this week with Philadelphia, the Ravens are looking to extend their preseason win streak to 16 games.

The general consensus surrounding the presesaon is that the third game is the most important one, as most of the starters see a good amount of playing time.By this point in the offseason, many teams already have an idea of what their 53-man roster is going to look like.

For the Ravens, however, there are still numerous question marks at different positions on both sides of the ball. Here’s a preview of the team’s showdown with the Eagles.

Defense’s toughest test to date

No offense to the likes of Gardner Minshew and DeShone Kizer, but the Ravens defense has yet to face much adversity this preseason. The Jaguars and Packers largely struggled to move the ball and while Baltimore deserves credit for being stingy, they’ll face a much more potent offense this week - especially if Carson Wentz suits up for a few drives. Even if Wentz doesn’t play, the Eagles have capable signal-callers in Josh McCown and Clayton Thorson, a strong offensive line, and several talented players at WR-RB-TE.

Opportunity awaits for young offensive lineman

We’ve talked all offseason about someone emerging at left guard, and unfortunately a surefire starter has yet to separate himself from the pack. Jermaine Eluemunor has been running with the 1’s for several weeks but the results have been mixed. Eluemunor is nursing an injury he suffered earlier this week, however, opening the door for James Hurst, Ben Powers, or Patrick Mekari, the latter of which is looking to continue the streak of UDFA making the Ravens 53-man roster. Any standout performance from either of these three guys could push them atop the depth chart alongside or ahead of Eluemunor.

Can Justice Hill and Chris Moore continue their strong play?

Baltimore’s two best offensive playmakers through two preseason games have been WR Chris Moore and RB Justice Hill. Moore has caught all six of his targets for 100 yards, as well as a 23-yard touchdown reception from Trace McSorley against the Packers. With Seth Roberts and Marquise Brown missing time, Moore may be in the driver’s seat for a starting receiver spot. The same can’t be said for Hill, although his performance to date suggests he may play a larger role in the offense than originally thought. Against Green Bay and Jacksonville, Hill posted a combined 98 yards from scrimmage and a rushing touchdown.

Key matchups:
C Matt Skura vs. DT Fletcher Cox

One of the only constants in Baltimore this offseason has been Matt Skura, the team’s starting center. Skura has been available and steady throughout OTA’s, minicamp, and training camp. Unfortunately, more often than not, Skura’s on-field performance leaves much to be desired. Thursday night represents a great test for the Duke product, as the Eagles signed a talented defensive end in Malik Jackson this offseason. Jackson played 13 snaps in Philadelphia’s matchup against Jacksonville last week, and even a similarly-low snap count tomorrow would pose a challenge for Skura.

CB Marlon Humphrey vs. WR Alshon Jeffery or DeSean Jackson

After signing former Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson in free agency, Philadelphia now boasts a talented outside wideout duo of Alshon Jeffery and “D-Jax”. Whether or not they suit up on Thursday night remains to be seen but if either of them play, star cornerback Marlon Humphrey will likely be shadowing them. In the unlikely scenario that both receivers are active, Humphrey should be matched up with Jeffery, one of the league’s most athletic and talented jump-ball playmakers. Jackson, on the other hand, is a bonafide deep threat. Humphrey is well-equipped to handle any type of receiver but either Jeffery or Jackson would pose a solid challenge.

Nine Jaguars experts break down Thursday’s Preseason Week 3 game between the Jaguars and Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida

JACKSONVILLE – Each week during the 2019 season, nine Jaguars experts – Rick Ballou, Tony Boselli, Frank Frangie, Jeff Lageman, Brent Martineau, John Oehser, Brian Sexton, J.P. Shadrick and Ashlyn Sullivan – will break down the following day’s Jaguars matchup.

Up this week:

The Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, for Preseason Week 3.

Rick Ballou, Jaguars sideline reporter

1.Offensive issue to watch: All the attention will be on quarterback Nick Foles, but the state of the offensive line is extremely important. If Cam Robinson, Andrew Norwell and Jawaan Taylor all play, it would be a huge step in developing some chemistry before the opener against Kansas City.

2.Defensive issue to watch: I want to see how middle linebacker Myles Jack does in a game situation with the first-team defense. He called the plays a year ago, but with Telvin Smith gone, he takes complete control of this unit. With uncertainty at weak-side linebacker and inexperience at safety, it will be interesting to see if all the right calls are made.

3.Player to watch: Rookie running back Ryquell Armstead. The running back situation suddenly is thin. Armstead looked good two weeks ago in Baltimore before leaving with an injury. How much will Leonard Fournette play? Armstead has a tremendous opportunity to run with the starters against Miami's No. 1 defense.

Tony Boselli, Jaguars analyst and former Jaguars left tackle

1.Offensive issue to watch: Can the offense with Foles under center get in a rhythm and score some points? We still do not know really what the John DeFilippo offense is going to look like and how will he use Fournette, wide receiver Dede Westbrook and others in his offensive scheme. Even though they will still be pretty vanilla with the game plan, Week 3 of the preseason will give us our first taste of what we can expect from this offense.

2.Defensive issue to watch: I think this defense is going to be really good and the only real question I have is the weak-side linebacker. The only thing I really care about in the entire preseason is coming out healthy, which doesn’t change for the so-called dress-rehearsal game. I hope we don’t see defensive end Calais Campbell, cornerback Jalen Ramsey, cornerback A.J. Bouye, defensive tackle Marcell Dareus and defensive end Yannick Ngakoue (to name a few) this week. They know how to play, and the defense is going to be good.

3.Player to watch: It has to be Nick Foles. Not only is he the quarterback, he was the biggest offseason free agent. A big part of the team's success is riding on his right arm. I am excited to get a quick (very quick) glimpse of him this week. He has been great in practice this camp, and it will be fun to see him in game action.

Frank Frangie, Radio Voice of the Jaguars

Offensive issue to watch: For me, just the chemistry of it all. Lots of these guys have never played in a game together. Foles, Fournette, Chark and Westbrook – they are all new teammates. Everything from getting used to Foles' cadence in a game, to managing a real play clock, the whole bit. I'm hopeful they have at least two or three series together to iron out the kinks.

Defensive issue to watch: Linebacker. That is by far the youngest position group on defense; Jack is a very young leader of the pack. Yes, Najee Goode is older and has been around, but Jack is the leader of the group because he has been here, calls the defenses, etc. Goode must play well if they don't have rookie weak-side linebacker Quincy Williams this week. And Leon Jacobs has to establish himself at strong-side linebacker; I have a hunch that one isn't decided yet, either.

Halfway through the preseason, the Packers have split their matchups, falling to the Ravens 26-13 last week. The Raiders are doing well, going 2-0 so far with wins against the Rams and the Cardinals.

Thursday marks the third time that Green Bay has played a preseason game outside the United States. The Packers defeated the Bills 35-3 in Toronto on August 16, 1997 and beat Kansas City 27-24 in overtime in Tokyo on August 2, 1998.

Green Bay Packers
Will we finally see franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers hit the field for few snaps in Week 3 of the preseason? Cheeseheads are hoping so. Last season was a bit of a write-off for Rodgers as he spent most of it struggling through injury. It didnt help that he wasnt getting much protection. In his 16 starts, the Bad Man was sacked 49 times. Green Bay has spent much of the offseason trying to remedy that glaring issue, and theyve drafted and traded specifically to give Rodgers a little more time in the pocket.

In order to make Rodgers happier, the team gave Mike McCarthy the boot, which puts all the pressure to get along with Aaron Rodgers into the hands of new head coach Matt LaFleur, who is only a few years older than his star quarterback.

Green Bays biggest issues in the last couple years, years in which they failed to make the playoffs, arent all Rodgers-related. The Packers defence has been weak, ranking 22nd against the run and 22nd overall. Mike Pettine has a lot to fix. Last week, the defense looked shaky, so the hope is that the starting defensive players will be a lot more impressive when the regular season in underway. Eyes are still on the backup quarterback contest as well. Last week Tim Boyle completed 12-of-21 passes for 107 yards.

Oakland Raiders
The Packers arent the only team in this game whove had major defense problems. Oakland struggled to protect Derek Carr last season, and not only that, they had a hard time giving him anyone reliable to throw to. So, the Raiders went to work in the offseason, signing All-Pro wideout and troublemaker Antonio Brown, as well as OG Trent Brown. Those gains came with a couple big losses for Oakland however, with the departure of Marshawn Lynch and Jared Cook.

Jon Gruden was considering his changed roster when he drafted Alabama running back Josh Jacobs. Jacobs has played well so far this preseason and is expected to play when the regular season starts.

Two backup quarterbacks are in the mix to be Carrs backup this season. Mike Glennon completed 11 of 14 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns, while Nathan Peterman went 8 for 8 for 41 yards as they both compete for the role.
