"Monday Night Football" features the Steelers hosting the Dolphins in a game that, let's be honest, the NFL probably would have flexed out if it had the option. These two teams played in an AFC Wild Card game in 2017 that the Steelers easily won, 30-12, but most key players are gone. Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown accounted for nearly 300 yards of offense and three touchdowns in the victory, and neither left Pittsburgh on good terms. Miami's quarterback was Matt Moore, and he's now in Kansas City, while Ben Roethlisberger currently patrols the Steelers' sideline after suffering a season-ending elbow injury in Week 2.

The Dolphins are 0-6 already this season and have given up 30 points or more in all but one game against fellow bottom-dweller Washington. The storylines write themselves with this team, as they continue to tank... err try really, really hard to win this season. Ryan Fitzpatrick is back under center after Josh Rosen failed to produce. Miami's defense has only one interception, courtesy of Bobby McCain, and seven sacks from five different players. Their one bright spot has been former first-rounder Taco Charlton, who was claimed off of waivers after being released by Dallas.

The Steelers are 2-4 and are coming off their bye week and begin a stretch of three straight at home. They have used three quarterbacks this season but it looks like Mason Rudolph will be back under center after missing Week 6 against the Chargers. This is a very good defense that should be able to put pressure on Miami from every level. First-rounder Devin Bush leads Pittsburg with 52 tackles and has added a sack and two interceptions. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick also is making an impact after being traded by the Dolphins to the Steelers in mid-September.

Miami at Pittsburgh

Kickoff: Monday, Oct. 28 at 8:15 p.m. ET

TV: ESPN

Spread: Pittsburgh -14

Three Things to Watch

1. Intangibles

As mentioned above, Pittsburgh is coming off a bye week with two wins in their last three contests. The Steelers have to be feeling good about themselves and should be about as fresh as possible for this one. If this game gets out of hand, head coach Mike Tomlin may try and give some guys a breather as they get ready for a tough stretch of games (vs. Colts, vs. Rams, at Browns). For Miami, everyone is well aware of what the team is trying to accomplish even if the Dolphins have a "winnable" game up next at home against the Jets. This also is Miami's third straight road game since its Week 5 bye.

2. Taking care of business

Miami has trailed at halftime by the following scores: 42-10, 13-0, 10-6, 17-10 and 7-3. Only once have the Dolphins led at the half, last week when they were up 14-9 at Buffalo (went on to lose 31-21). This shows that the team tries hard out of the gate before letting down in the second half. It's a fascinating study to see this team pull off what they are doing. The Steelers need to use this game to get James Conner going since he has yet to run for more than 60 yards in a game this season. They also need to get Mason Rudolph going and build chemistry with JuJu Smith-Schuster. If top Miami cornerback Xavien Howard is out once again, then that should happen.

3. Trade deadline auditions

If I were a member of the Dolphins, I'd be playing hard so I could join a contender as the team continues to sell off assets. Running back Kenyan Drake was the latest sent packing, as he was traded to Arizona on Monday for a conditional 2020 draft pick. Drake didn't even travel with the team to Pittsburgh for this game so it was apparent he was not part of the team's future plans. As for the rest of the roster, Ryan Fitzpatrick should be garnering more interest as a backup somewhere or potentially a starter. He's completed 59 percent of his passes but has three touchdowns to five interceptions. The FitzMagic version can help teams win games, but the FitzTragic version will make sure you have no shot. There are some decent veterans on defense who could be on the move too. Play hard and a reward could be a trade to a playoff contender.

Final Analysis

I mean, the Steelers are going to win. I could write a flowery paragraph here about the advantages and edges they have, but let's be honest, you've got one team trying and one not trying. It may be close early since Miami has shown the propensity to keep things competitive, but the lack of talent will catch up to them in the end. Pittsburgh gets this one in the win column as they make the push for a playoff berth.

Prediction: Steelers 27, Dolphins 10

The San Francisco 49ers have been one of the NFL's biggest surprises this season and will look to keep things going Sunday at home against the Carolina Panthers. One of two undefeated teams left, the 49ers have raced out to a 6-0 start thanks to the league's second-ranked defense and seventh-ranked offense, both sides of the ball not featuring many household names.

One catch though: The Niners have played just one winning team all year, the 4-3 Rams. With the obvious caveat that winning every game will make your opponents' records look worse, their opponents have a combined 11-28 record. They've put up excellent numbers — all year only one game has been within one score — but that could change against a quality opponent

The question then becomes whether or not the Panthers are a quality opponent. Carolina (4-2) is currently just a half-game out of the second wild-card spot despite stumbling out of the gate with two home losses, but it's hard to know what to make of their quarterback situation. There's never been a player in Charlotte quite like Cam Newton, but he wasn't himself when he was playing, and with the way Kyle Allen has performed, the Panthers don't appear to be in any rush to get the former league MVP back out on the field.

The Panthers have had an extra week to prepare during a Week 7 bye, so they should be fresher and well familiar with what San Francisco will try and do on offense and defense. The Niners will have an extra weapon at their disposal, as they traded third- and fourth-round draft picks to the Broncos for wideout Emmanuel Sanders. All this makes for one of the more fascinating games on Sunday's slate.

Carolina at San Francisco

Kickoff: Sunday, Oct. 27 at 4:05 p.m ET
TV: FOX
Spread: San Francisco -5.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Can the Panthers' defense make a big play?

Carolina's defense has been solid-to-middling as far as yardage (7th in passing, 16th in rushing), but they've truly excelled in the turnover game. With nine picks, they trail only the vaunted Patriots. However, they have yet to score a touchdown on any of those picks, and Ross Cockrell has the longest return at just 37 yards. Given how tough it may be to score against the 49ers defense, a defensive touchdown or even a big turnover would be huge.

Jimmy Garoppolo may make it easy on them, as he has just one more touchdown (7) than interception (6). The soon-to-be-28-year-old has not stretched the field much (219.0 passing ypg), and the Panthers lead the league with 27 sacks, so they could force him into bad decisions. Keep an eye on safety Eric Reid, well known for his protests of police violence and racial inequality, whom the 49ers let go two seasons ago. He told reporters on Wednesday that he would be determined against his former team and "wouldn't forget" how they treated him.

2. Can Kyle Allen keep it going?

Many thought the Panthers' season would be over when Cam Newton revealed a Lisfranc injury after Week 2, but Kyle Allen has been more than capable in his stead. The former No. 1 recruit out of high school has posted an impressive 65.6 percent completion rate in four starts but more importantly, has seven touchdowns to no interceptions. He has fumbled the ball six times, which leads the league despite starting the season as the backup.

Things will get much harder, though, since the 49ers have by far the toughest pass defense Allen has seen all year. His previous four opponents — Cardinals (25th), Texans (29th), Jaguars (17th), Buccaneers (32nd) — are all in the bottom half of the league, while San Francisco paces the league at just 133.5 passing yards per game. Allen has played so well, he's forced the Panthers to consider which quarterback is best for its future, but this will be his first true test.

3. Can anyone stop Christian McCaffrey?

It's not often that a running back enters the conversation for the MVP, but McCaffrey is making about as great of a case as any could with 618 rushing yards (third in NFL) plus a team-leading 35 receptions, good for another 305 yards. McCaffrey is tied with Green Bay's Aaron Jones for the most touchdowns by a skill position player — despite already having his bye — and seems to be more of a reason than Allen why the Panthers have stayed afloat in Newton's absence.

Stopping McCaffrey will be the first, second, and third thing the Niners will have to focus on defensively. They've only allowed one rushing score all season, so something will have to give. Given San Francisco's tough pass defense, expect the Panthers to run the ball more than the 40.8 percent rate that they have all season. Staying on the field for long drives could be the best way to wear out a stingy 49ers defense.

Final Analysis

The Panthers have dominated this series for much of this century, taking six of the last seven games with their wins coming by an average of 11.7 points. Carolina may not yet — or ever — be a playoff-caliber team, but their fearsome pass rush off extra rest will present a unique problem, especially with both starting offensive tackles banged up for the 49ers. This one won't be very high scoring, but the team whose defense makes the most big plays will likely come out on top.

Prediction: Panthers 16, 49ers 13

Both the Oakland Raiders and Houston Texans are trying to bounce back after tough losses a week ago. The Raiders (3-3) were absolutely whipped by the Green Bay Packers as Aaron Rodgers picked apart the Oakland defense for five touchdown passes. The Texans (4-3) let a golden opportunity slip from their hands as they dropped a close game in Indianapolis and fell out of first place in the AFC South.

Both teams are still trying to find an identity nearing the halfway point of the season. The Texans definitely have more offensive firepower, especially in their passing game with Deshaun Watson finding his groove. The Raiders are a bit of a surprise this season at 3-3 but seem to be just a few pieces short of being a pretty good team. While both squads were wounded a week ago, they both still find themselves in second place within their respective divisions. A win on Sunday for either team would keep it above water and in the playoff hunt.

Oakland at Houston

Kickoff: Sunday, Oct. 27 at 4:25 p.m. ET

TV: CBS

Spread: Texans -6.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Limiting mistakes

The Texans were kicking themselves in last week’s postgame media scrums for what players and coaches called "self-inflicted wounds." Penalties and turnovers cost Houston a shot at a huge road win against their division rival and a first-place spot in the AFC South. The Texans have been getting in their own way all season long, ranking fifth in the league in penalties against and staying dead even in turnover margin nearly halfway through their schedule. Last week against Indy was no different, as the Texans were flagged 10 times for 54 yards and turned the ball over twice. The last giveaway, a Deshaun Watson interception, came on what could have been a game-tying drive with 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

This week is a good opportunity for the Texans to clean it up against a Raiders defense that is one of the worst in the league at forcing turnovers (only five) and lacks a dangerous pass rush.

2. Can either defense pressure the QB?

The jokes about Oakland's lack of a pass rush have been many and warranted since they traded Khalil Mack to the Bears last season. This season, the Raiders are 27th in sacks with just 10 in their first six games. But the Raiders aren’t the only team in this game that struggles to get to opposing quarterbacks. The Texans have recorded seven more sacks than the Silver and Black this year. While 17 may seem like a lot more than 10, it’s still only good enough for 17th in the league.

The once-feared Houston pass rush has been tamed over time with the trade of Jadeveon Clowney, the retirement of Brian Cushing and the gradual decline of J.J. Watt (four sacks this season). That leaves linebacker Whitney Mercilus, the only player in this game with at least five sacks on the season (5.5).

Sunday’s game will come down to who can protect their quarterback the best. Watson is among the 10 most sacked (21) and hit (41) quarterbacks in the league, while Oakland’s offensive line has been stellar at protecting Derek Carr, allowing just eight sacks.

3. The ground game

The Texans will have a clear advantage in the quarterback battle on Sunday with Watson calling the shots, but the two teams are about even when it comes to running the football. Houston has relied on a resurgent Carlos Hyde (111 att., 461 yards) to carry most of the load this season, and it’s worked. With the help of Duke Johnson (6.2 yards/rush), Hyde has turned the Texans into a top-10 running team, averaging 134 yards as a unit per game (8th) and taking some of the burden away from Watson.

The Raiders took a shot and drafted Josh Jacobs in the first round of this year’s draft, and the rookie from Alabama has been paying dividends. He is currently fifth in the league in yards per carry (5.1) and yards per game (92.3), putting himself in the driver's seat for Rookie of the Year honors and turning the Raiders into a top-five running team (137 yards per game).

The Texans and Raiders have fantastic run defenses, both ranking in the top five in yards allowed per game. And despite Houston’s ability to stop the run, I won't be surprised if Jon Gruden gives Jacobs at least 25 touches, especially on first and second downs, to put Carr into more manageable third-down situations, where he has excelled this season (134.9 QB rating, 29 first downs, 5 TDs).

Final Analysis

If the Raiders want to pick up a road win and get back above .500, they need to keep Watson and Houston’s balanced offense off the field. They do that by running the ball effectively and converting on third downs, which they do at a 50 percent clip, second-best in the league. However, that’s easier said than done when the Texans have so many weapons on the offensive side of the ball. Give me Houston by a field goal.

After two straight losses and a bye week, the Cleveland Browns will try to get their season on the right track against the undefeated New England Patriots, who are fresh off their 33-0 dismantling of the Jets on "Monday Night Football."

Based on preseason hype, the Browns are the NFL's biggest disappointment as we near the halfway point of the season. Outside of running back Nick Chubb, a Browns offense that was supposed to be a juggernaut has been lackluster. Second-year quarterback Baker Mayfield has noticeably regressed, and at times this season, first-year head coach Freddie Kitchens has seemed to be in over his head. On Sunday, we’ll find out just how much good the bye week did the Browns.

The New England Patriots, fresh off their sixth Super Bowl victory, are firing on all cylinders in 2019. Their plus-175 point differential is the highest of the Super Bowl era through seven weeks. Unlike in most of their championship runs, the Pats are led by a defense that ranks at the top of nearly every important category. The 42-year-old enigma that is Tom Brady isn’t as dominant as he once was, but he is still finding ways to baffle defenses (and Father Time) with less than stellar offensive weapons. A win against Cleveland on Sunday would put the Patriots at 8-0 for the third time in franchise history, all under the guidance of Bill Belichick.

Cleveland at New England

Kickoff: Sunday, Oct. 27 at 4:25 p.m. ET

TV: CBS

Spread: Patriots -10

Three Things to Watch

1. Can Baker bounce back?

After losing to the Seahawks two weeks ago, Baker Mayfield told reporters, "I play best when I’m angry." If that’s the case, Mayfield needs to turn into the Hulk in Foxboro this Sunday, because he’s currently playing like the league’s worst quarterback. Among all quarterbacks with more than two starts this season, Mayfield currently ranks dead last in QB rating (66) and completion percentage (56 percent) while leading the league in interceptions with 11. Let me put it this way: Mayfield is playing so poorly this season that after Jameis Winston threw five interceptions last week — while Mayfield and the Browns were on a bye, mind you — Winston was still second behind Mayfield in picks thrown this season.

The last two games, Mayfield has been a measly 30-of-59 on pass attempts with five interceptions and just one touchdown. He’s been at his worst when his team needs him to be at his best, in the fourth quarter — when he has thrown six interceptions and posted an atrocious QB rating of 26.5, while converting only nine first downs. Sure, the Browns’ offensive line has been shuffled around and inconsistent, but they’re still giving Mayfield more time to throw (3.3 seconds) than all but three other quarterbacks in the league.

Of course, not all of the Browns’ woes fall on Mayfield’s sophomore slump. What should be the most sure-handed receiving corps in the league with Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry is actually third in the league in dropped passes (15), and Beckham and Landry have one touchdown catch between them — an 89-yard catch and run by Beckham against the Jets’ broken coverage.

Sunday, Mayfield has to find a way to right the ship against the best defense of the Belichick era.

2. Patriots' impenetrable defense

In 1994, the Bill Belichick-led Cleveland Browns had the league’s best defensive unit, surrendering just 204 points during an impressive 11-5 season. The Belichick-led Patriots defense of 2019 is on pace to concede about half the points of that ’94 Browns squad, allowing just 48 points through the first seven games of this season. The Pats’ D is absolutely dominating games, leading the league in points allowed (6.9), yards allowed (223.1), turnover percentage, third-down stops (14-percent) and red zone stops.

With Mayfield struggling, the Browns are likely to lean heavily on running back Nick Chubb in the ground game. Chubb is one of four runners averaging 100 rushing yards per game this season, but he has yet to face a defense as stout as New England’s. The Pats currently rank second in rushing yards (74.7) and first downs (12.5) allowed per game as opposing teams attempt to run the ball less against them than against any other defense (18 attempts/game).

If the New England front seven can shut down Chubb, the Pats’ top-ranked pass defense, which leads the league in interceptions (18) and is second in sacks (26), is likely to have another big day against a struggling Mayfield.

3. So how do the Browns win?

If the Browns have any shot at beating the Patriots in Foxboro on Sunday, it starts with stopping the run and putting pressure on Tom Brady in third-and-long situations. The Browns defense has struggled this season in stopping the run game, surrendering 154 yards per game and five yards per rush. But the New England rushing attack has been one of the worst in the league this season, ranking sixth in rushing attempts (209) but 22nd in rushing yards (683) and 30th in yards per attempt (3.0).

If the Browns can keep the inconsistent Sony Michel from picking up big gains on first and second down, and unleash the unblockable Myles Garrett (league-leading nine sacks) on Brady on third-and-long, they at least have a fighting chance against the well-oiled Pats machine.

Final Analysis

Unless the bye week provided Freddie Kitchens with a real-life cheat code, it’s hard to see the Browns beating the Pats on their home turf, especially with New England rolling. It seems that the best the Browns can hope for is for Garrett to force Brady into his annual one terrible game of the season and for Mayfield to magically find his mojo against the league’s best defense. Not likely, but hey — any given Sunday, right?

Prediction: Patriots 28, Browns 14

The Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs are defined by MVP-caliber quarterback play. But while Aaron Rodgers is coming off a season-best six-touchdown performance against the Oakland Raiders, Patrick Mahomes is lucky to be standing on both knees.

Indeed, it’s Mahomes’ dislocated kneecap that takes some of the luster off of this matchup. Even though Mahomes somewhat miraculously returned to practice this week, the Chiefs removed any suspicion regarding his status when they officially ruled him out Friday afternoon. That means veteran Matt Moore, who played admirably during the second half of a comfortable win last weekend against the lowly Denver Broncos, will get the start. Mahomes may be in just his second season as a starter in the NFL, but the drop-off in performance from him to Moore, who has just five starts in the last seven seasons, is pretty substantial. Moore has fewer career TD passes (46) in more than a decade of play than Mahomes racked up just last season (50).

The Packers also offer a much higher level of competition. Red hot under first-year head coach Matt LaFleur, the Packers are 6-1, tied for the second-best record in the NFC behind the undefeated San Francisco 49ers. And it’s their defense, not Rodgers, that has propelled them, last week’s offensive explosion notwithstanding. A strong performance against the Chiefs on Sunday night sends a message that this revamped team is worth considering as a Super Bowl contender.

Can Rodgers hand the Chiefs an unthinkable third straight loss at Arrowhead Stadium, one of the strongest home-field advantages in the NFL? Or will the Chiefs feel the pain of their MIA quarterback and suffer a third loss in four games after sprinting out to a 4-0 start?

Green Bay at Kansas City

Kickoff: Sunday, Oct. 27 at 8:20 p.m. ET

Spread: Packers -3.5

Three Things To Watch

1. Moving on without Mahomes

The fact that this was even up for debate prior to Mahomes being ruled out Friday afternoon is a testament to his impressive physical condition. The typical recovery timeframe for a dislocated kneecap, even under a best-case scenario, is three weeks. But there was Mahomes, practicing Wednesday as if he hadn't slumped to the ground in total agony six days earlier, the Chiefs’ season hanging in the balance with every painful step off the field.

Following that performance, Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter was among those adamant that Mahomes could make an unlikely start this Sunday. Was head coach Andy Reid really considering such a risky move just 10 days after a serious injury? Or were they simply trying to throw the Packers off the scent? The intrigue only deepened when Mahomes made another appearance in Thursday's practice, but early Friday afternoon, Reid put an end to all of the speculation.

While this is disappointing to Chiefs fans, football fans in general, and certainly Mahomes' fantasy owners, the question for Reid all along was, why rush it? Moore threw a TD pass in the second half of last week's game, as the Chiefs easily shut out the Broncos after Mahomes’ goal-line injury. It was a crucial win that improved their record to 5-2 and gave them control of their own destiny in the AFC West.

Sure, a loss to the Packers would push them to 5-3 with another red-hot NFC North team, the Minnesota Vikings, in line after that. But even a 5-4 record won’t be enough to keep the Chiefs from winning the AFC West. Their main competition, the Los Angeles Chargers, sit at 2-5 and have been a mess in the fourth quarter of recent games. The Oakland Raiders sit at 3-3, but the Chiefs hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. (Mahomes will almost certainly be back for their next matchup in Week 13, which comes after the Kansas City's bye).

So with winning the Super Bowl the ultimate goal, it simply wasn't worth the risk to trot Mahomes out there, even for a prime-time matchup against one of the NFC's best (teams and quarterbacks). The Chiefs currently sit as the second seed in the AFC but already have fallen two games behind the Patriots and are unlikely to catch them. If they’re going to end up a division winner anyway, there was no reason to risk further injury to the face of the franchise.

That leaves the Chiefs in the capable hands of Moore, who showed with a 57-yard strike to Tyreek Hill that he was still capable of using the weapons at his disposal. This team may be led by Mahomes but still has a top-three receiver in the game in Hill, a high-end running back in LeSean McCoy, and an elite tight end in Travis Kelce. The offensive weaponry makes them difficult to cover on any down; Moore simply has to manage the game and wait for one of his options to get open.

The journeyman’s career record as a starter is 15-15, not terrible considering the awful teams he was a part of through seven years with the Miami Dolphins. After a week of reps with the first team, you have to expect he’ll be well prepared.

2. Can Aaron Rodgers follow up on his most recent performance?

Rodgers, believe it or not, had been a bit player through the Packers’ hot start. Through six games, he was on pace for just 21 touchdown passes, easily the lowest total of his career over a 16-game season. LaFleur’s offensive system, putting more of an emphasis on the rushing attack, had kept Rodgers’ numbers down, along with a long-term injury to star receiver Davante Adams (turf toe).

But you can’t keep a Hall of Fame quarterback down forever. Rodgers finally exploded against a hapless Raiders defense, slicing through the secondary and connecting with a hodgepodge group of pass-catchers (aging tight end Jimmy Graham doesn’t really count). Jake Kumerow? Jamaal Williams? Allen Lazard? These are the names of average players Rodgers’ arm is capable of turning into superstars.

The one top receiver who was healthy last week, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, burst onto the scene with two incredible deep catches. His season-high 133 yards receiving included a 74-yard touchdown that put the game away in the fourth quarter. Assuming Adams is able to work his way back —he remains questionable at press time — the Chiefs defense will be even more stretched, opening up the field for another Valdes-Scantling bomb.

Keep in mind that the Chiefs, while ranking 10th against the pass, are just 24th on defense in total yards. It’s a soft enough unit that Rodgers can carve it up at will if he’s hot. And, make no mistake — Rodgers is on top of his game right now.

3. Can the Packers defense keep up this pace?

Much of the early-season story regarding the Packers has been about their resurgent defense. A goal-line turnover against Derek Carr swung the game last week against the Raiders; the Packers remain second in the NFC behind Carolina with 13 takeaways. Given that Moore hasn’t started an NFL game since 2017, one would expect that total to rise.

That makes defensive line play increasingly important. A unit that started out firing on all cylinders didn’t sack Carr once last week. The Smiths (Preston and Za’Darius) need to add to their total of 13 sacks and put pressure on Moore to rush his throws.

Both the Packers and Chiefs average a little over one turnover per game. If the Packers defense can push that number up to two or three? They’ll win handily.

Final Analysis

Even with no Patrick Mahomes running the show, I think Matt Moore is plenty capable of helping Kansas City keep this game close. But to me, Sunday night becomes a referendum on Matt LaFleur, Aaron Rodgers, and Green Bay's new-look attack. It’s a chance to show that this team is back in front of a national audience against a top-tier opponent who enters the game wounded.

I fully expect the Packers to show exactly that. LaFleur has done an outstanding job in his first year as head coach, and we’re about to see the fruits of that labor up close.

The first half of the 2019 NFL season comes to a close for the Seattle Seahawks (5-2) on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium when they take on the struggling Atlanta Falcons (1-6).

Seattle got a bit of a reality check last Sunday when they lost to the Baltimore Ravens, 30-16. Russell Wilson proved that he was human, throwing his first interception of the season to Marcus Peters, who returned it 67 yards for a score to give Baltimore 13-10 second-quarter lead. The Seahawks also didn’t have much of an answer for Lamar Jackson and the Ravens' running game, as they gave up 116 yards to Jackson on 14 carries. DK Metcalf’s fourth-quarter fumble resulted in a Marlon Humphrey 18-yard return for a touchdown that iced the game for Baltimore. Those two critical turnovers showed just how little of a margin for error there is in the NFL, especially for Seattle.

Atlanta has been in a free fall all season long with five straight losses after a 24-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2. The Falcons were overwhelmed by a desperate Los Angeles Rams team, 37-10 last Sunday afternoon. Quarterback Matt Ryan left the game with an ankle injury and is questionable for this week’s game. The lack of a running game cost Atlanta against Los Angeles too; they were only able to generate 38 yards on 15 carries. The frustration of a season getting away from them is another issue for the Falcons, as Devonta Freeman was ejected for punching Aaron Donald in the third quarter while trailing 20-3.

General manager John Schneider got active in the trade market on Tuesday when Seattle acquired safety Quandre Diggs from the Detroit Lions for a 2020 fifth-round draft pick. Diggs was a Lions' team captain and has the capability to produce at a high level with three interceptions in 2017 and '18. This season has been a bit more of a struggle since Diggs has been battling a hamstring issue. Two things sparked this move by Schneider to go out and get some help for the defense. First, injuries to Bradley McDougald and Lano Hill created opportunities for rookie Marquise Blair, who got his first start last Sunday. Blair is a very physical player who should pair well with Diggs in the secondary and start to bring back more of an aggressive element to the Seahawks. The other reason was Tedric Thompson giving up a 50-yard completion over his head to Miles Boykin during the opening possession last week against Baltimore. Giving up a deep ball like that is the ultimate cardinal sin as a defensive back for coach Pete Carroll.

2. Seahawks' offensive balance and pass rush

The Seahawks have a great opportunity to get right this week when it comes to taking care of the fundamentals. First, the running game couldn’t get rolling last week against a fired-up Ravens defense. Chris Carson had 21 carries for 61 yards and wasn’t able to wear down Baltimore in the second half. Atlanta ranks 21st in rushing defense at 113.7 rushing yards allowed per game, so opportunities should be plentiful for Seattle offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to establish the run. This will then set up Wilson to go to work throwing the football in play action to Tyler Lockett, Jaron Brown, and DK Metcalf. It will be important for the receivers to do a better job of creating separation, as Wilson had the throw ball away 12 times last week. Defensively, the Seahawks' inability to get sacks continues to be a problem; their 11 sacks on the year ranks just for 26th in the NFL. This week should be a great opportunity for their defensive line to generate more pressure since neither Ryan nor backup Matt Schaub will be very mobile. The lack of mobility of the Falcons quarterbacks should help Jadeveon Clowney and Ziggy Ansah get more opportunities for sacks this week.

3. Which Atlanta team is going to show up?

Head coach Dan Quinn is on the hot seat with the Falcons sitting at 1-6. The defense, Quinn's specialty, has struggled all year long, which adds fuel to the speculation that owner Arthur Blank will eventually move on from Quinn. The front office has started the fire sale this week by trading wide receiver Mohamed Sanu to the New England Patriots for a second-round draft pick. One has to wonder if the other players rumored to be on the trading block will mail it in or play out of their minds to encourage a trade. Hence, getting off to a fast start will be important for the Falcons if they are going to have a shot to pull off a huge upset. The nightmare scenario is falling behind 17-0, which would allow the Seahawks to tee off defensively and turn the crowd against them very quickly.

Final Analysis

If you are going to be a playoff team in the NFC, there is very little room to give away games when as the favorite. Seattle should be able to start fast and methodically pull away for a decisive win. Wilson will get back on track, throwing the football and connecting on about three explosive plays in the passing game to threaten 300 yards. The defense will do a solid job and create a couple of turnovers against whoever starts at quarterback this week. Bottom line, the Seahawks will have enough focus on the road in Atlanta to get the job done to set themselves up for another winnable game next week at home against Tampa Bay.

Prediction: Seahawks 30, Falcons 17

The Eagles' three-game road swing is shaping up as a season-crushing disaster if they can't win in Buffalo. If they can't stop the run and play mediocre up front on offense, what is their identity? Philadelphia keeps cutting players a day after starting them (Zach Brown, Orlando Scandrick) and benching once-promising options like Sidney Jones. These are signs of a team in tumult. Facing Josh Allen should help the Eagles' sagging secondary, although the Bills have done a credible job staying aggressive with the pass despite Allen's uneven play. Allen's running ability also helps the Bills stay second in red-zone touchdown percentage. This is a coin-flip game ...

Philadelphia Eagles 20, Buffalo Bills 19

For the Win, Charles Curtiz and Steven Ruiz

Charles: Bills

I’d rather bet on the team that didn’t just give up 37-plus points in their past two contests, even though I’m now backing the team that kept it a little too close against the Dolphins.

Steven: Bills

Buffalo has one of the best-coached defenses in the NFL, and I don’t know if we can say the same about the Eagles right now. The Bills win a close one thanks to two Josh Allen rushing touchdowns.

The Chargers’ defense is allowing 4.2 yards per rush, 19th in the NFL, and opponents are averaging 117.1 rushing yards per game against Gus Bradley’s group. Los Angeles is 24th in rush defense DVOA, too, backing up those traditional numbers.

The point: If there’s ever a game for Matt Nagy to commit to running the ball, it’ll happen on Sunday. The Bears do not necessarily need David Montgomery to have his first 100-yard game in the NFL, but if Nagy can be patient with the results in the first half it should pay dividends in the final two quarters. (Latavius Murray, for example, had 30 rushing yards in the first half last week, then finished with 119 as the Saints physically wore down the Bears’ defense in the second half).

A good day for Montgomery would be 20 carries for at least 80 yards — including runs on consecutive plays — though the Bears could still win even if his yardage total was down in the 60’s or 70’s. Just the mere commitment to it would help this entire offense better find a rhythm that’s been lacking far too often in 2019.

2. Execute on third and short.

If the Bears’ measly seven rushing attempts last week were an indictment of Nagy, this stat is an indictment of his players’ execution:

The #Bears' average distance to gain on third down yesterday was 5.8 yards. That's really good. Absolutely comical that only two of those 12 attempts were converted into first downs.

— JJ Stankevitz (@JJStankevitz) October 21, 2019
Inside that stat: The Bears had four third down tries with fewer than four yards to gain and converted none of them against the Saints (in total, the Bears lost 13 yards on those four plays). And on the season, the Bears are averaging 2.9 yards per play on third and four or fewer, the worst average in the NFL.

These need to be the sort of “layups” offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich said the Bears need to make. Merely converting them — even if a drive doesn’t lead to points — will help keep the Bears’ defense off the field and fresher for longer. This is, too, an exceedingly low bar for the Bears to clear. But since they didn’t clear it last week, it now becomes something they absolutely have to do on Sunday to emerge with a win.

3. Help out the offense on defense.

While the Bears’ defense buckled under the massive weight placed upon it by the offense last week, it’s a group that prides itself on being better no matter the circumstances. Those circumstances, even without the offense’s help, should be more favorable to this defense on Sunday.

The Chargers are 22nd in the NFL with 12 giveaways (six interceptions, six lost fumbles), so a Bears team hungry to create turnovers should have some opportunities on Sunday. And while Philip Rivers has only been sacked on 11 percent of his drop backs (seventh-lowest in the league), only two quarterbacks have been under pressure more frequently than the 37-year-old veteran.

Russell Okung’s return to the left side of the Chargers’ offensive line should provide a boost on Sunday (and make Leonard Floyd’s job more difficult), but Los Angeles’ pass protection is nonetheless beatable. The formula seems simple: Pressure Rivers without sending blitzes and get him off-schedule with his receivers, allowing ballhawking safeties Eddie Jackson and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to use their range to pick off some of those floating, fluttering passes he throws. All six of Rivers’ interceptions this year have been thrown when opponents have not blitzed, per PFF.

Prediction: Bears 17, Chargers 16.

The Chargers are 2-5 and, while Okung and running back Melvin Gordon are back, are already without All-Pro safety Derwin James and might not have stud wideout Keenan Allen on Sunday. Then again, the Bears weren’t able to beat a depleted New Orleans Saints team last week — but that’s one of the NFL’s very best teams. The Chargers are not.
The Bears will win to move to 4-3, but it won’t be pretty. Still, a win is a win, and for a team looking for a spark, even a one-point win over a struggling opponent will count for something.

The New York Giants will travel on the road to Ford Field on Sunday afternoon for their Week 8 matchup against the Detroit Lions.

The Giants are in rebuilding mode and the youth movement will be underway again this weekend when the team travels to Detroit. New York recently got back star running back Saquon Barkley, but they will need better quarterback play from rookie Daniel Jones if they hope to stop their current slide. Jones has committed costly turnovers in each of the last two losses and now has more interceptions (7) than passing touchdowns (6) so far this season. Meanwhile, the Lions continue to disappoint under second-year head coach Matt Patricia, who’s on the hot seat in Detroit following a 2-3-1 start. Can the Lions reverse their struggles against an inexperienced Giants’ team on Sunday?

Mired in a three-game losing streak, the Giants will try to reverse their struggles on the road in Detroit after losing to Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals last week. Daniel Jones passed for 223 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while Saquon Barkley returned to action to finish with 72 rushing yards and a score in less-than-ideal field conditions. It was another forgettable performance for Jones, who was sacked eight times and also lost two fumbles on the day, giving him six turnovers over his last two games.

Detroit is also trying to battle their way out of a funk after sliding to 2-3-1 following last week’s 42-30 drubbing against the NFC North-rival Minnesota Vikings. Matthew Stafford threw for 364 yards, four touchdowns and one interception, while Marvin Jones caught all four scores and veteran receiver Danny Amendola added eight catches for 105 yards in the loss. For Jones, it was his second career four-touchdown game, joining Jerry Rice and Sterling Sharpe as the only two players in the league since 1950 to catch four touchdowns in two games. Detroit also suffered two key injuries in the loss, as both Kerryon Johnson and top cornerback Darius Slay left the game and did not return.

Barkley confident he can handle full workload
New York never recovered from a slow start last week, losing at home 27-21 to the Cardinals. The Giants have been forced to play without No. 1 wide receiver Sterling Shepard, who remains in the concussion protocol this week after sustaining his second concussion of the season in Week 5 against the Vikings. According to the New York Post, the team is targeting next week’s Nov. 4 Monday Night Football matchup against the Dallas Cowboys for his return. While Jones won’t benefit from Shepard’s presence in the lineup this weekend, he will have a healthy Saquon Barkley. Barkley was limited at practice this week, which is something he will have to get used to coming off a high ankle sprain. Despite the injury, Barkley is in high spirits and believes he can handle his normal workload.
Meanwhile, tight end Evan Engram will try to rebound following a dismal one-catch, six-yard performance last week in a good matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Engram had five targets and dropped two balls last week, leading to some trade rumors heading into this week’s contest.

With next Tuesday's NFL trade deadline coming closer, and the Giants not competing, there will be more potential players on the trade block. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, New York is reportedly considering moving cornerback Janoris Jenkins, a veteran who returned this season to help the younger defensive backs. Jenkins is also affordable under the salary cap this season, though he's not a free agent. Next season, he is under contract for $11.25 million.

On defense, The Giants enter allowing 26.7 points and 406.6 yards of total offense per game. The Lions enter the week without their No. 1 running back, but that didn’t stop Cardinals’ backup Chase Edmonds from rumbling his way to 126 yards and three touchdowns against them last week. The Giants come in giving up 131.4 yards per game on the ground, which ranks 24th in the NFL.

How Jets  +6.5 Can Cover
Exorcise Sam Darnold’s demons.  The second-year QB said he was “seeing ghosts” on Monday night against the Patriots’ blitzing cover-zero defense.  Darnold can’t play any worse than he did against New England, but he needs to find some consistency and cohesion with an offense that has been incredibly volatile this season.  Making things more difficult, the Jets are just 2-6 ATS in their last eight games when playing on Sunday following a Monday night game.

How Jaguars -6.5  Can Cover
Minshew Mania returns.  It never truly left, but it’s certainly been quieter of late.  After winning two of his first three NFL starts, the Jags have dropped two of their last three with Minshew under center.  WR DeDe Westbrook is expected to play on Sunday, according to Adam Schefter.  Westbrook is battling neck and shoulder injuries but still led the team in receiving last week with six catches for 103 yards.

Perhaps a change of scenery will help the Cincinnati Bengals when they take on the Los Angeles Rams in London's Wembley Stadium on Sunday. The Bengals (0-7) and Dolphins are the only NFL teams that have yet to win a game this season while the Rams (4-3) are hoping last week was a sign of things to come.

Cincinnati has come close a couple of times, with four losses decided by no more than six points, but is still seeking its first victory under first-year head coach Zac Taylor. The offense has felt the absence of wide receiver A.J. Green but the lack of a running game has been a bigger issue. It's been the opposite for the other side of the ball, however, as the Bengals haven't been able to stop any team from running on them.

Los Angeles is above .500 but it's a far cry from what everyone expected from the defending NFC champions. The Rams got off to a 3-0 start that quickly turned south with back-to-back-to-back losses to the Buccaneers, Seahawks, and 49ers. Jared Goff has been inconsistent, Todd Gurley has been OK but nothing like the force he was last season, and turnovers on offense have been a problem. The defense is full of star power (and just added some more) but also has given up some big numbers on more than one occasion.

This will be Cincinnati's second game played in London. The Bengals and Redskins tied 27-27 in Week 8 of the 2016 season. The Rams are 1-2 across the pond, with their first appearance taking place in 2012 when the franchise was in St. Louis. Two years ago, Los Angeles shut out Arizona 33-0 in Twickenham Stadium. Sunday's game will be played in historic Wembley Stadium after the first two London games this season were held in brand-new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Cincinnati vs. Los Angeles

Kickoff: Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. ET
Where: Wembley Stadium (London)
TV: CBS
Spread: Rams -13

Three Things to Watch

1. Will either team get going on the ground?

Last season, Todd Gurley and Joe Mixon finished third and fourth, respectively, in the NFL in rushing with each going well over 1,100 yards. So far this season, the duo has combined for 565 yards. Neither is on pace to even break 800 yards on the ground. Gurley has missed one game and the questions about the health of his knee just won't go away. Meanwhile, Mixon is averaging three yards per carry, has yet to have a run that's gone for more than 18 yards, and is still looking for his first rushing touchdown after recording eight in 2018.

As a team, Los Angeles has fared better running the ball but that's not saying much considering Cincinnati is dead last in the league (53.1 ypg) in this category. The Rams have gotten some contributions from backup Malcolm Brown and rookie Darrell Henderson, but if this team wants to be viewed as a legitimate threat to get back to the Super Bowl, it needs Gurley to return to his 2018 form when he produced more than 1,800 yards from scrimmage and league-high 21 touchdowns (17 rushing). Again, workload has been a factor, as he's had no more than 18 carries in any game and missed the Week 6 loss to San Francisco because of a thigh injury. But he posted a season-high in carries last week (averaged just 2.3 ypc) so the hope is that he will be able to handle another full workload this Sunday. After all what better way to get "healthy" than against the league's worst run defense?

2. Which QB's game travels best?
While no one is expecting Jared Goff or Andy Dalton to put up numbers similar to Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Rodgers, it's not a stretch to say that the two should play better than a rookie and a handful of backups. But that's where Goff and Dalton stand right now as they have posted passer ratings (83.3 for Goff, 77.9 for Dalton) that have them both behind Kyle Allen, Mason Rudolph, Teddy Bridgewater, Gardner Minshew, as well as Case Keenum, Marcus Mariota, and Joe Flacco (among others).

Goff has thrown for plenty of yards (1,995, sixth in NFL) but he has been responsible for as many turnovers (7 INTs, 4 fumbles) as touchdowns (9 passing, 2 rushing). He's also completing just 62 percent of his passes. Goff's numbers are still better than Dalton, who is struggling with accuracy (60.1 percent) and interceptions (8, tied for third most). Dalton definitely misses wide receiver A.J. Green, who has yet to play this season because of an ankle injury suffered on the first day of training camp. Green has returned to practice on a limited basis but he is probably a long shot to play on Sunday. Green also could be on the move as trade rumors swirl around the seven-time Pro Bowler.

Statistically, the two pass defenses Goff and Dalton will see on Sunday are somewhat similar, but there are two glaring differences. The Rams get after the quarterback (19 sacks) while the Bengals have had trouble generating much pressure (9 sacks). Second, Los Angeles has the two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year in Aaron Donald and just added another All-Pro, cornerback Jalen Ramsey, to the mix. Cincinnati doesn't have the star power to match up on either side of the ball so the advantage in this QB duel clearly goes to Goff. It's just a matter of him making the most of the opportunity. On the other side, Dalton needs to find a way to make plays without the self-inflicted mistakes to give his team a chance of hanging around.

3. LA's newest Ram(sey) on defense

Speaking of Ramsey, the former Jaguar made an impact for his new team right away, as he took on the challenge of covering Atlanta's Julio Jones last Sunday. Jones posted a game-high 93 yards on six catches (nine targets) but Ramsey made him work for those yards and kept him out of the end zone. Ramsey also caused a fumble by Falcons running back Devonta Freeman that even though he recovered, still put Atlanta behind the chains. Los Angeles went on to post a convincing 37-10 victory on the road.

With Aqib Talib on injured reserve and Marcus Peters traded to Baltimore, the Rams needed help in the secondary and there was no bigger name available than Ramsey. After saying he wouldn't be traded, Jacksonville finally relented and while Ramsey still has a contract situation that will need to be addressed at some point (and could result in him ending up with another team), he seems to have fully embraced this fresh start. That's a bad sign for the rest of the teams on the Jaguars' schedule.

Final Analysis

Traveling overseas is not easy on any NFL team so I'm not expecting the Rams to be clicking on all cylinders on Sunday. It would be nice to see another step forward from Todd Gurley, whether that is in the form of a big play or increasing his workload and yards per carry average at the same time. Los Angeles also needs to see more consistency and mistake-free play from Jared Goff, who needs to take advantage of facing the league's worst defense.

The Bengals haven't thrown in the towel on this season yet and I don't think they will go 0-16. But they are simply outmanned and outclassed in this one, although it wouldn't surprise me if Zac Taylor's familiarity with Sean McVay (Taylor was a Rams assistant under McVay the previous two seasons) allows the student to show the teacher one or two new things.

Prediction: Rams 30, Bengals 13

After back-to-back road games, the New Orleans Saints return home looking to extend their winning streak to six in a row when they host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

This will be the Saints' (6-1) last game before their bye and they no doubt would love to go into the off week on a high note. New Orleans dominated Chicago on the stat sheet last week, especially when it came to the Saints' defense, but some atypical breakdowns and sloppy special teams play gave the Bears a chance to score a couple of touchdowns late to make the final score 36-25.

The Cardinals (3-3-1) also are coming off of a road victory, beating the Giants 27-21 behind a monster (126 rushing yards, 3 TDs) performance from backup running back Chase Edmonds. After a 0-3-1 start, rookie head coach Kliff Kingsbury's team has rattled off three straight wins, two of those coming on the road.

The series between the Cardinals and the Saints is tied, 15-15. For games played in New Orleans, the Saints hold an 8-4 advantage. The Cardinals have not won in New Orleans since 1996. These teams have split the four most recent meetings.

Arizona at New Orleans

Kickoff: Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. ET

TV: CBS

Spread: Saints -10.5

Three Things to Watch

1. What does Chase Edmonds have in mind for an encore?
Last week in New York, Edmonds turned in the most productive day of his professional career by far. He carried the ball 27 times; his previous career-high in 22 NFL games was eight attempts. He ran for 126 yards, nearly doubling his previous career-best total. He also scored three touchdowns, equaling his career output.

Edmonds got all of that work because starter David Johnson has been hampered by an ankle injury. After being questionable entering last week's game, Johnson ended up with just three carries, giving way to Edmonds. Johnson did not practice Wednesday or Thursday so it remains to be seen how involved, if at all, he will be in the game plan on Sunday. At least, head coach Kliff Kingsbury has a pretty good Plan B to turn to in Edmonds.

But it may not matter who gets the carries considering New Orleans' sustained success in stopping the run. Since Week 11 of the 2017 season, no player has gone over 100 yards on the ground against the Saints. In that span of 33 games, only six have even exceeded 70 rushing yards. In 2017, Devonta Freeman, Peyton Barber, and Todd Gurley accomplished that feat. Last season, only Ezekiel Elliott broke 70. So far this season, Carlos Hyde (83) and Leonard Fournette (72) have had the most success. New Orleans is ninth in the NFL in rushing defense at 90.6 rushing yards per game allowed.

2. Will the Saints iron out their special teams problems?
The Saints committed multiple glaring miscues in the kicking game against the Bears last week. After scoring their first touchdown, they allowed Cordarrelle Patterson to return the ensuing kickoff 102 yards. Wil Lutz missed two field goals on four attempts after misfiring just once (13-of-14) prior. The Saints also failed to jump on an onside kick late in the game, and they nearly allowed the Bears to recover a second such attempt.

Not everything that the special teams did at Soldier Field detracted from the victory. After the Bears went three-and-out to open the game, the Saints blocked a punt, resulting in a safety. PunterThomas Morstead continued his field-flipping ways, pinning the Bears inside their 25-yard line on all four of his punts.

Can the Cardinals' unremarkable yet adequate special teams tip the balance in Arizona's favor? Kicker Zane Gonzalez has connected on 18-of-21 field goals and is 3-of-5 from 40 yards and out. Andy Lee has averaged 47.8 yards per punt (with one blocked last week in New York). Andy Isabella has five punt returns for an average of 21 yards per return. The Cardinals have yet to score a special teams touchdown but Sunday would be a great time to get one or at least come up with a big play to help spark the offense.

3. Can the Cardinals win the turnover battle?
Arizona has masterfully protected the ball so far. The Cardinals have thrown four interceptions, tied for ninth fewest in the NFL. They have yet to lose a fumble; they're the sole team with that distinction. In total, they have the fewest giveaways in the league.

Arizona has experienced much less success in taking away the ball. The Cardinals have recovered five fumbles, tied for 12th in the league. They have picked off just one pass, tied for fewest in the NFL.

As much as the Cards need to take away the ball to have a chance to upset the Saints, doing so will not be easy. New Orleans has turned the ball over only five times. The Saints' turnover margin is plus-four, which ties them for fifth.

Final Analysis

Arizona's season appeared to be a lost cause after the first quarter of the schedule. The Cardinals have rebounded with three straight wins and now have a chance to go above .500 at the halfway point. That would be quite the confidence builder for a team with a rookie head coach (Kliff Kingsbury) and quarterback (No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray).

Whether Drew Brees makes his return from the thumb injury and how much he plays (if at all), makes no difference for this game. New Orleans' defense has more than done its job in his absence, as the Saints currently rank in the top 10 in the NFL in both points and rushing yards allowed per game. Whether it's Brees or Teddy Bridgewater at quarterback, they just need to keep protecting the ball and feeding it to wide receiver Michael Thomas. Another rash of special teams breakdowns appears to be the only thing that would allow Arizona to stay in this game.

Prediction: Saints 30, Cardinals 13

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers return from their bye week but not yet to their home stadium, as their midseason five-city tour continues with a relatively short hop to Nashville. The 2-4 Buccaneers will be taking on the 3-4 Tennessee Titans and trying to do what the Titans did in dramatic fashion last week: End a two-game losing streak.

The Bucs will close out the first half of the season with away games against Tennessee and Seattle and will aim to get back to .500 before a more favorable run of five home dates in eight weeks. While the Buccaneers rank fourth in the NFL in points scored per game they will try to come back from the bye with a cleaner, more mistake-free attack after an avalanche of seven turnovers doomed them against Carolina in London. Tampa Bay's defense, meanwhile, may be getting pass-rusher Jason Pierre-Paul back in the fold and will try to turn up the heat on opposing quarterbacks in order to help a struggling secondary.

The Bucs may have scored a lot of points this season but the Titans haven't allowed many. They still haven't surrendered more than 20 points to any opponent this season, though it took a stunning Melvin Gordon fumble at the goal line at the end of last week's game to keep that note intact. The Titans have a very good veteran secondary anchored by one of the NFL's most complete safeties in Keith Byard and a trio of strong corners – Malcolm Butler, Logan Ryan and Adoree' Jackson – all with different strong suits. That will definitely be a matter of strength on strength, as Tampa Bay's offense is driven by perhaps the league's best duo of wideouts in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Tampa Bay's defense, meanwhile, will be the second test for new – but quite experienced – starting quarterback, as former Dolphin Ryan Tannehill took over for former first-round pick Marcus Mariota last week. Tannehill was sharp in his Titans debut start but the Bucs will hope to pressure him into more mistakes in his second outing.

It's another weekend on the road and another difficult challenge for the Buccaneers. Here's what you need to know to prepare for all the action in Week Eight.

The Washington Redskins (1-6) are traveling to Minnesota to take on the Vikings (5-2) at U.S. Bank Stadium for "Thursday Night Football." At this point, these two teams seem to be heading in very different directions.

The Redskins are under new leadership with interim head coach Bill Callahan after Jay Gruden was fired following an 0-5 start. Since then, the team is 1-1 with its only win being a 17-16 victory against the Miami Dolphins in Week 6.

The Vikings, on the other hand, are on a three-game winning streak where the average victory has been by 16 points. A major reason for that success is the play of quarterback Kirk Cousins, who has completed 75.6 percent of his passes for 976 yards and 10 touchdowns during that span.

Washington at Minnesota

Kickoff: Thursday, Oct. 24 at 8:20 p.m. ET

TV: FOX/NFL Network

Spread: Minnesota -15.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Who will step up in Adam Thielen's absence?

Along with Stefon Diggs, Thielen is part of the NFL's most dynamic 1-2 punch at wide receiver. Unfortunately for Minnesota, the 29-year-old suffered a hamstring injury last week and has already been ruled out for Thursday night's game. This will be the first game he has missed in his six-year career.

From 2017-18, Thielen combined for 204 receptions, 2,649 yards, and 13 touchdowns. In 2019, his receptions and yardage production have dipped (27 receptions, 391 yards). But he's already hauled in a whopping six touchdowns through seven weeks, one of which he was injured for most of the game.

With Thielen out, the Vikings will need a pair of rookies, tight end Irv Smith Jr. and receiver Oalbisi Johnson, to step up in his stead. The two combined for nine receptions, 100 yards and a touchdown against the Lions in Week 7.

2. Cousins, Keenum, and Peterson facing former teams

If you have not heard yet, several starters in this game will be facing off against their former teams. Kirk Cousins, who was drafted by the Redskins in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, is now the Vikings’ franchise quarterback.

As if that was not enough, the entire Redskins starting backfield, which includes Case Keenum and Adrian Peterson, used to play for the Vikings. Peterson is an especially big factor, as the former Oklahoma product was a first-round pick in 2007 and rushed for 11,675 yards and 97 touchdowns for the franchise from 2007-16. Peterson, who is averaging 3.7 yards per carry but has seen more touches (43 carries, 199 yards) in the two games since Bill Callahan was named interim head coach, is dealing with some sprained ankles but he is expected to suit up against his former team on Thursday night.

3. Dalvin Cook is in MVP form

It is amazing that the Vikings were able to go from Peterson to Cook as their starting running back. Although his first two seasons were injury-riddled, Cook is emerging as a potential MVP candidate during Year 3.

The Florida State product has produced 945 total yards (725 rushing, 220 receiving) on 157 touches to go along with eight rushing touchdowns. He's leading the league in rushing and is averaging a healthy 5.5 yards per carry. With him leading the way, Minnesota is third in the NFL in rushing offense at 160 yards per game.

Washington was supposed to field one of the top run defenses. But the Redskins currently rank No. 28 and are allowing 134.4 rushing yards per game, which does not bode well for their chances on Thursday night.

Final Analysis

The Redskins are currently one of the NFL’s worst franchises. The ownership is being widely criticized and the talent is mostly bare on offense — especially along the offensive line.

It will be interesting to see how this game is going to shake out. The over/under currently sits at 42 points, and that number still seems a little bit high. In fact, the Redskins have not hit the over in any of their last four games, as they’ve only scored 27 combined points during that time.

It would be wise to expect a lopsided victory for a Minnesota team that is currently one of the hottest in the NFL. As it sits, the Vikings are ranked sixth in the NFL in both total offense (391.0 ypg) and total defense (327.9). That's not a good combination for Washington to deal with.

Prediction: Vikings 27, Redskins 7

The New England Patriots go for their third 7-0 start in franchise history when they visit the revitalized New York Jets on Monday Night Football. It's an 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. New England manhandled the Jets 30-14 in Week 3, holding Gang Green to 105 total yards, but now New York has starting quarterback Sam Darnold back under center. He sparked the Jets to their first win, a 24-22 upset of Dallas, last week. Sportsbooks list New England as a 9.5-point favorite in the latest Patriots vs. Jets odds, with the over-under for total points set at 43.5. Before you make any Jets vs. Patriots picks, see the Monday Night Football predictions from SportsLine data scientist and New England expert Stephen Oh.

The renowned co-founder of Accuscore, Oh simulates each game 10,000 times using the SportsLine Projection Model. Last season, he nailed 26 of his 37 NFL picks against the spread, an incredible 70 percent success rate.

And Oh is uncanny when it comes to the Patriots. In fact, all-time, he is 15-6 picking for or against New England. Anyone who has followed him is way up. Now, Oh has crunched the numbers and locked in another confident against the spread pick for Patriots vs. Jets. It's available only at SportsLine.

Oh knows the Patriots are on pace to allow 128 points this season, which would be an NFL record. Their dominant defense was on full display in the first meeting, as New York mustered just six first downs and failed to convert all 12 third-down tries. Even after last week's outburst, the Jets rank last in total offense at 220 yards per game.

Quarterback Tom Brady, who's 16-7 all-time on Monday Night Football, is enjoying another efficient season, having tossed 10 touchdown passes against three interceptions. He's helped the Pats to a plus-nine turnover margin, best in the NFL entering Week 7. The Patriots have won seven straight meetings with the Jets, with four straight and five of the last six victories coming by double-digits.

But just because New England is undefeated and has dominated this series doesn't mean it'll cover the Patriots vs. Jets spread on Monday Night Football.

New York looked like a new team in Darnold's first game back from a bout with mononucleosis. After completing 72 percent of his passes for 338 yards and two touchdowns versus the Cowboys, Darnold was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week. His 92-yard touchdown pass to Robby Anderson, a perfect throw that hit the speedster in stride, created a buzz around the league that the Jets' season might not be over after all. Darnold has played two games this season, a one-point loss to the Bills and the upset of Dallas.

In more good news for the Jets, inside linebacker C.J. Mosley practiced this week after missing four straight games with a groin injury. Mosley is the leader of the Jets' defense, and his return would be a massive boost to a team many considered an AFC East dark horse before the season. The Jets have covered five of the past six home meetings with New England.

We can tell you Oh is leaning over, and he's also isolated a critical X-factor that makes one side of the spread a must-back. He's only sharing what it is, and who to back, over at SportsLine.
